Fifth Sidney Smith Cue
Cooke Troughton and Simms cue
The Cooke Troughton and Simms cue.
The cue has four pieces of satin wood around the butt. This would not have been a cheap cue at the time it was made.
The butt is flared in what I think of as a semi billiard style yet it is strong enough to play snooker with. I have used it once as the ferrule is not seated very well. I dare not risk splitting the shaft due to its quality and rarity.
Peter Ainsworth reports that Cooke, Troughton & Simms Limited were a major British manufacturer of surveying and optical instruments, which eventually became part of the Vickers Group and couldn’t imagine they were retailing cues at any time in their history, he suggested it was made for use in one of their recreation rooms.
